Art
Intent
At St Andrew’s our intent for Art is to ensure children are given opportunity to access a wide range of art opportunities by exploring a diverse range of artists and styles that reflect both our local community and the wider world. We value Art as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum and as such feel high-quality art should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. Art provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thought and ideas. We aim to produce artists that are courageous and feel safe in taking a risk by providing an inclusive environment, where everyone can fulfil their artistic potential. We aim to create learners that are able to use research to inspire their own artistic development and to develop critiquing skills when looking at the work of other artists and designers.
Implementation
The Kapow scheme of work weaves together the individual strands to create an engaging and learning experience for the children:
- Generating ideas using sketchbooks, taking inspiration from a range of artists.
- Making, developing drawing skills along with painting, printing, photography, sculpture and mixed media
- Formal elements-Exploring colour, form, shape, tone and texture.
- Knowledge of artists-Discovering artists work and techniques.
- The inter-related dimensions of Art
- Evaluation
In each lesson the children will actively participate in art activities drawn from their own ideas and personal interpretation, hence developing their skills and understanding of how art works. The lessons incorporate a range of teaching strategies from independent tasks, paired and group work, as well as teacher-led modelling. Lessons will often make cross curricular links with other areas of learning.
Impact
The impact can be monitored through both formative and summative opportunities.
At St Andrews we expect the children to leave with a range of skills to enable them to succeed at secondary school. The expected impact is:
- Be confident artists and will be able express themselves through art.
- Show an appreciation and respect for a wide range of artistic styles from around the world and will understand how Art is influenced by the wider cultural, social and historical context in which it is developed.
- To have an awareness of various Artists and their styles.
- Demonstrate and articulate an enthusiasm for Art and identify their own artistic preferences.
- Meet the end of key stage expectations outlined in the national curriculum for music.
